Celgen® Chicago Hardy Fig is a widely recognised cold-tolerant common fig variety valued for its dependable growth, rich flavour and ability to recover strongly after seasonal cold damage.

The variety produces attractive medium-sized figs that mature from reddish-brown or bronze-purple to deep purple-brown under suitable growing conditions. The interior develops a rich strawberry-red to amber-red pulp with a sweet, juicy and pleasantly rich fig flavour.

Chicago Hardy is particularly appreciated in regions that experience cooler winters. Established plants may lose part or all of their above-ground growth during severe cold, but healthy roots can produce fresh shoots when favourable weather returns. The variety can form fruit on current-season growth, making it useful for growers in areas where winter dieback may occur.

Chicago Hardy is not frost-proof. Winter performance depends on plant age, root establishment, minimum temperature, wind exposure, soil drainage, mulching and the protection provided by the growing location.

BASIC GROWING GUIDANCE

Choose a location receiving full sunlight and protected from intense cold winds.

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid low-lying areas where rainwater or irrigation water remains stagnant around the roots.

Provide regular irrigation during establishment, but allow excess water to drain freely. Consistent moisture during active growth supports healthy canopy and fruit development.

Pruning can be used to maintain the plant as a manageable bush or small tree. In colder areas, allow several strong basal shoots to develop because a multi-stem form may recover more easily after winter damage.

Apply mulch around the root zone in cold regions, keeping the mulch away from direct contact with the main stem. Young plants may need additional winter protection until their root system becomes well established.

For container cultivation, use a sufficiently large pot with adequate drainage and protect the root zone from extreme freezing conditions.
