Washington Navel Orange Tree
Description:
The Washington Navel Orange produces medium to large, spherical to slightly obovoid fruits with a bright deep orange rind and a characteristic navel-like mark at the blossom end. The fruit has a rich, sweet flavor, is easy to peel, and is widely appreciated for fresh consumption. It also holds well on the tree and ships reliably, though it is sensitive to heat and arid conditions during bloom and fruit set.
Origin:
The Washington Navel Orange originated in the early 19th century in Bahia, Brazil, as a natural mutation on a sweet orange tree. This mutation produced seedless fruit with the distinctive navel formation. In 1870, cuttings were introduced to the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., and later distributed to California, where the variety flourished. Since then, it has spread worldwide and is now among the most popular and commercially important orange varieties.
Harvest (India):
In Indian conditions, particularly in states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Punjab, Washington Navel oranges are typically harvested during the winter season (December to February). The fruits mature best under cool, dry conditions and reach peak quality in this period, making them a premium winter orange for the domestic market.
